Day 1 (July 25): Blagoevgrad – Plovdiv – Stara Zagora (286 km)


The Old Town of Plovdiv
Breakfast. Departure for Plovdiv (194 km), the second largest city in Bulgaria, situated in the Upper Thracian Plain, on the banks of the Maritsa River.
Late morning walking tour of the architectural and historical complex The Old Town of Plovdiv. Visit to the House of Stepan Hindliyan, a typical example of a house dating back to the National Revival Period (18th – 19th c). You will have the opportunity to watch the show At a wedding in the Old Town of Plovdiv where you will get acquainted with the Bulgarian lifestyle and traditions during the National Revival Period. Lunch.
Early afternoon walking tour of the Old Town to get to know the architecture of the National Revival Period – Balabanov’s House, the Ethnographic Museum, the ancient pharmacy Hippocrates, the church of St. Konstantin and Helena (one of the oldest in the city), the Ancient Theatre (one of the main public buildings in Ancient Philippopolis), Archaeological Complex Small Early Christian Basilica.
Free time to walk along the so-called Main Street. Officially named Knyaz Alexander I Street, it is the main shopping and pedestrian area of Plovdiv. It starts from the Central Square (where the Trimontium Hotel, the Central Post Office and Tsar Simeon’s Garden are located), passes by Stefan Stambolov’s Square with the Municipality Building and goes to the Roman Stadium (today’s pedestrian zone lies over the stadium) and the Dzhumaya Mosque. From here tourists can go either to the Old Town or to the Kapana district (the Trap District). The so-called Small Main Street (Rayko Daskalov Street) continues along the Hali shopping centre, crosses The 6th September Boulevard (underpass of Pharmacy Maritsa) and ends at the covered pedestrian bridge over the Maritsa River.

Day 2 (July 26): Stara Zagora – Shipka – Veliko Tarnovo (102 km)


Breakfast. Departure for Veliko Tarnovo. En-route visit to the National Park-Museum of Shipka, a unique historical and architectural park which combines the beautiful nature of the Stara Planina Mountain and the historical significance of monuments dedicated to important events in the Bulgarian history.
Arrival in Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria. Accommodation at a hotel. Lunch. Sighseeing tour of Veliko Tarnovo. Visit to the architectural and historical complex of Tsarevets located near the centre of Veliko Tarnovo. Fascinating with its incredible architecture, it served as the primary fortress and strongest bulwark during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185 – 1393), housing the royal and patriarchal palaces.

Visit to the church of Holy Forty Martyrs, the most famous medieval Bulgarian monument in Veliko Tarnovo. It was built and decorated with frescoes under the Bulgarian tsar Ivan Asen II to commemorate the great victory of the Bulgarian army over the forces of the Epirus despot Kir Theodore Komnenos at the Klokotnitsa village on 22 March, 1230.
Visit to and free time at the Architectural and Ethnographic Complex of Samovodska Charshiya. At present the handicraft street is a significant museum in Veliko Tarnovo that continues to cherish the traditions and the romantic spirit of the National Revival Period. A number of craftsmen work in their shops today – a potter, an armourer, a coppersmith, a woodcarver, a weaver, a confectioner, an icon painter, a photographer. Also, there is a café, a workshop where kadaif is made, and a bakery.
Free time in the city centre. Around 8.30 p.m. you will have the opportunity to watch the special performance of the Sound and Light show on the Tsarevets hill. This is a stunning, breathtaking light show, presenting/depicting the dramatic/tumultuous history of the Second Bulgarian State through chime, specially written music and gunfires. Such shows are organized only at five other places in the world. Dinner. Overnight.


Day 3 (July 27): Veliko Tarnovo – Sofia (221 km)
